How can you stay out of trouble if going for a drink?

Drinking and driving come with many potential consequences. You could face a DUI charge and harm yourself or someone else.

Because of the long-term impact that all these things can have on your life, it’s important to take steps to protect yourself.

Have a designated driver

Any time you go out drinking, it’s a good idea to have someone agree to be the designated driver. Remember, you should volunteer for this from time to time, too.

Use a rideshare service

If you plan to go out and drink alone, you should be sure to use a taxi or rideshare service. These services provide a safe option to get from point A to point B without putting yourself or others at risk of a potentially devastating accident.

Avoid riding with someone who has been drinking

If you know someone has been drinking, don’t get in a car with them. It’s also smart to encourage them not to drive. You can take their keys if needed. While they may be angry at the time, the alternative to this is usually much worse.

Eat and drink while you are out

It’s possible to reduce the impact of drinking by eating and drinking water or soda while you are out. You should not bank on this to keep you safe, however.

Sometimes, you may feel fine to drive and get behind the wheel when you should not. If you do this, it may result in you being pulled over and charged with a DWI. While this can be a frustrating situation, remember you have rights. Protect your rights by never admitting to drinking and taking the proper legal steps to build a solid defense against the charge.
