Associate Attorney

Tess Berkowitz joined Agre & St. John as an Associate in September 2023. Her practice focuses on criminal defense, as well as some family law matters. Ms. Berkowitz joined the firm after completing a clerkship with the Honorable Edward J. McBride, P.J.Cr., the Presiding Judge of the Criminal Division in Camden County, where she became well-versed in criminal motion practice. During that time, Ms. Berkowitz also worked under the Honorable Michele M. Fox, J.S.C., Ret..

Ms. Berkowitz graduated from Rutgers Law School in Camden in 2022. During law school, she participated in the Domestic Violence Clinic, where she represented multiple parties in final restraining order proceedings; her performance in the clinic earned her the Richard J. Hughes Award for excellence in New Jersey practice upon graduation. Ms. Berkowitz also served as a Student Director of the Domestic Violence Pro Bono Project, assisting unrepresented parties in Family Division proceedings and supervising other law student volunteers. Additionally, Ms. Berkowitz was selected to serve as a Student Attorney in the Rutgers Law Edna Mahan Project, where she appeared with class members at testimonial proceedings. During law school, she also served as President of the Veteran’s Law Society and as a Street Law instructor to Camden youth. For her service to the community during law school, Ms. Berkowitz received a Mary Philbrook Public Interest Award in Fall of 2021, and the Dean’s Pro Bono Publico Award for Exceptional Service.

Ms. Berkowitz also served as a Staff Editor of the Rutgers School of Law Journal of Law and Public Policy. Her note, Breaking Up with the American Adversarial Approach in Criminal Domestic Violence Adjudication was selected and published in the Spring 2023 issue.

Prior to law school, Ms. Berkowitz worked as a paralegal for two years after graduating cum laude from Roger Williams University in 2017.
